Seeing in the Dark

...a sacrifice of thanksgiving
           to the LORD...

          Leviticus 22. 29

(Is the sacrifice of thanksgiving
because we are thankful
to the LORD
for what has already happened
                    (past tense)?
Or the act, attitude, and
   words of visible gratitude
   before we see an outcome?
A sacrifice of thanksgiving
             is not for something,
       but to God.
Trusting Him in the shadowlands
says, "I trust You, O God,
   no matter what comes.
      You are still with me."
Most often we cannot comprehend
       His vast goodness over us.
Sometimes we catch a glimpse,
             but He is always here.
Being thankful is being mindful
      of His steadfast love.)

O LORD,
We all too often drag our
       messiness to the altar.
We also offer praise
      when things are good.
Grant us now the courage
   to be thankful
in the now and the not yet.
You go before us,
You walk beside us,
    You have our back.
We lay before You
     our thankfulness,
even before we know
    how You are unfolding
          this situation.
Help us to live faithfully.
You give a grateful heart
the ability to see in the dark.
In our sacrifice,
           we see You.
