The unfolding
        of Your words
gives light....

        Psalm 119. 130

(I will not understand
everything.
I will not comprehend
everything at once.
But God is
   Himself to us,
unfolding His truth
and grace
in bite-size pieces.
"Trust Me in this."
I just might not
  be ready yet.)

O LORD,
May we seek You
in all things,
even that which
we don't understand
            at all.
But You are
the Almighty One.
Help us to trust You.
Help us to be aware
   of Your unfolding
   of it.

For this purpose
I was born
and for this purpose
I have come
     into the world --
to bear witness
     to the truth.

           John 18. 37

(God has strategically
positioned each of us
to bear witness,
point others to Him,
and bring the name
      of Jesus there.
As they say in Young Life,
"You were made for this."
God has equipped
and prepared us,
even in the most
 unusual experiences
and unlikely ways
and unexpected places,
to bring His glory there.
Even in this.
God redeems.
God always redeems.)

O LORD,
Help us to trust You,
not just with the next,
    but with the now.
Prepare us
not just for today,
but weave Your purposes
in everything we do
and say
and pray
and obey.
Help us respond
    to Your nudges
and love and serve
You even in the
          hard stuff.
We would be amazed
    at Your handiwork.
   even in this.

If Your law had not been
       my delight,
I would have perished
       in my affliction.

               Psalm 119. 92

(God's Word is
             my strength.
God's Word
   gives me hope on which
               to stake my life.
God's Word
   holds it all together.
God's Word changes me
  every time I read it.
More than I know.)

O LORD,
Order our days.
Guide our steps.
Direct our thoughts.
Align our hearts
          with Yours.
Weave Your Word
   into our lives.
For Your glory.

Friday, May 28, 2021

I glorified You on earth,
having accomplished
the work that
You gave me to do.

           John 17. 4

(Would I have a
   different attitude,
   approach,
   intent and effort
in this task
or hard appointment,
if I knew it was
               from God?
What if this difficult thing
was meant
     to glorify Him?)

O LORD,
We rarely recognize
    Your hand
in what we do
even while we
     are doing it.
Help us to bring
   Your holy Name
with us into this day
and keep in mind
      Your glory
and Your Presence.
Even in this.
There are
no small obediences
in Your economy,
        O LORD.
Grant us Your joy
    in loving
    and serving You.

Thursday, May 27, 2021

Truly, truly I say to you,
whatever you ask
              of the Father
   in My name,
He will give it to you.
Until now you have
asked nothing
         in My name.
Ask,
and you will receive,
that your joy may be full.

           John 16. 23=24

(Have we asked at all?
Have we asked
             in His name,
our hearts aligned with His?
Willing to trust Him
     and to seek Him,
not just an answer
or a predetermined outcome?
"In Jesus name, Amen" are not
   magical words
to get what we want,
but words of trusting God
and dedication to Him,
          no matter what.)

O LORD,
We come before You,
not with our own agenda
    or gift registry,
but seeking You
           into this day,
a day and everything in it
              unknown to us
but totally known by You.
Lay Your day before us,
                 Almighty God.
You don't just do good.
     You are good.
You do not promise
       "get what you want,"
but "I am with you"
   in this broken world.
We ask You today
  to align our hearts
               with Yours.

And the king said,
"Is there not still someone
of the house of Saul,
that I may show
the kindness of God
                to him?"

          2 Samuel 9. 3

(There is someone
in my day today
and along my path today
to show the
         kindness of God.
There always are.
We are actually surrounded
by opportunities
both great and small
  to show the love
  and grace of God.
And there are
  no small kindnesses.
We have no idea
how God is using
our words, actions
and attitudes
to push back the darkness
in the lives of others
to point them to Him.
Or to encourage them
  through a deep valley.
Being kind
is not just something we do,
but also
    does something to us.
God changes us
   in the very core
          of who we are.
Act on one kindness
and the next will rise up.
We are even more aware.
How we see God
changes how we
         see others
and how we see
             ourselves.)

O LORD,
Help us not just
to be aware of times
      to be kind,
but to be kind,
every opportunity
            we can,
even in the unexpected.
To love You
and to love others,
even in what we think
   are small kindnesses
change the world radically
    one heart at a time
and point others to You.

Peace I leave with you.
My peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives
   do I give to you.
Let not your hearts
      be troubled,
neither let them be afraid.

             John 14. 27

(The peace of Christ
is not based on
the absence of conflict
or shifting circumstances,
but on His Presence,
even in
   impossible situations.
When our hearts
    are not troubled,
we approach things
       differently.
The reality of
      do not fear
is "I am with you.")

O LORD,
Help us to not just
        be not afraid,
but help us to
   go forth fearless
          with You
into what You
  have placed before us.
Fearless,
faithful,
fruitful.
Nothing is insignificant
     in Your economy.
All for Your glory
        in this day.

And he said,
"The LORD has
burst through my enemies
before me
     like a bursting flood."
Therefore the name
of that place is called
           Baal-Perazim.

          2 Samuel 5. 20

(Literally in the Hebrew,
Baal-Perazim means
"The Lord
    of breaking through."
That is one of the
    names of God.
That is Who we believe in.
That is Who He is.
Our foes and enemies
are anyone or anything
we fear,
both real and imagined.
Most often
the imagined ones
    are the most daunting.
Whatever our impossible
    and difficult situation,
no matter how overwhelming,
God is already working
   His victory into it,
and He will burst through
in ways that astound us
and in ways we may
            never recognize.
And He redeems our lives
  out of every adversity.
       --2 Samuel 4. 9
He always has.
He always will.
"Trust Me in this.")

O LORD,
We have seen too much
to question You in this.
You are Almighty God.
You love us.
And You are working
   deeply in us
and through us.
Help us not just to
      look to You,
but to be faithful to You,
even in the hard stuff,
even on the
     most ordinary days.
Because we know You,
we can approach
this situation differently.
Help us to be strong,
be courageous
and trust You in this.
Help us to feel the wind
     as we run with You.

Sunday, May 23, 2021

He laid aside
   His outer garments,
and taking a towel,
tied it around His waist.
Then He poured water
into a basin and began
to wash the disciples' feet
and to wipe them
with the towel that was
   wrapped around Him.

              John 13. 4-5

(What are my outer garments
that I need to lay aside?
Pride?
Worries?
Fear?
Selfishness?
What people may think?
And what are the
      towel and basin
that God has given me
               today
to serve Him
and bless others?
A way of seeing
  unexpected appointments,
a way of loving others
   to Jesus
in whatever way I can,
with whatever is in my hands
and He has placed in my heart.
Today will always
look very different
when my eyes are on Him
and I am willing
to trust Him in this situation.
I can't do everything,
  but I can do something.)

O LORD,
You have given each of us
towels and basins,
not just tools to serve You,
but hearts to bring
   Your Name here.
You equip us in ways
we don't understand
until the need arises,
and suddenly Your strength
        is made evident.
What are my towel and
        basin today?
Give me the courage
and heart
    to use them.
For Your honor
         and glory
   and Kingdom
and in Your Name.

Walk while you
      have the light,
lest darkness
      overtake you.

         John 12. 35

(Seizing every opportunity to
intentionally know Him more,
through scripture,
in fellowship,
by praying,
in worship,
in serving,
in loving Him
        and others.
Not what
       might have been,
or maybe later,
but in what is now.
Even in this.
We may not pass
       this way again.)

O LORD,
You say,
"Let's go for a walk."
Help us
to strap on our shoes
   and walk with You,
no matter the time
or place
or circumstances.
"Trust Me in this."
Help us to realize
that this is all about
   knowing You more
and trusting You in it.
It is not what we have done
or what we are doing,
but Your Presence with us
and Your hand over us.
Help us to walk with You,
right now in this moment,
before the night,
not just knowing
        You are with us,
but to know You are God.

...all the people
were bitter in soul,
each for his sons
         and daughters.
But David
strengthened himself
             in the LORD.

         1 Samuel 30. 6

(We live in a broken world.
We choose how to respond
to the hard things of life,
by choosing to despair
or choosing to trust God.
Trusting God always leads
to a different direction,
approach and response.
We cannot control
      circumstances
      or the outcome,
but we can trust Who does.
We can respond differently
because God has given
each of us hope in Him.
Pushed to the limits,
the end of our rope,
down in the dirt,
we don't just find
    our need for God.
We find Him already there.
    "I am with you."
 And that changes
           everything.)

O LORD,
Help us to trust You
in the hard stuff
when we don't understand
and don't know
          how to respond.
We choose to trust You.
Order our days.
Guide our steps.
Direct our thoughts.
And align our hearts
           with Yours.
May the strength and hope
we have in You
spill out all over
       those around us
to point them to You,
    O Almighty One.
How we see You
         changes us
not just in our response,
but how we see others
and how we see ourselves.

But David remained
     in the wilderness.

         1 Samuel 26.3

(Why in the world am I
in this strange place?
Because God has
strategically placed
      me here
for His purposes,
for His glory,
and for the wellbeing
     of many people.
Sometimes the wild
and the unknown
is the safest place on earth.
The wilderness is
           never barren,
but the site of
tremendous growth
in our relationship with God,
the ripening of His purposes,
the revealing of
         the great beauty
         of who He is.)

O LORD,
May we seek You today
wherever you place us,
in the known and ordinary,
in the wild and unknown.
There You are with us.
Fulfill Your purposes
            in and through us.
Open our eyes
to Your wonders
            all around us.
Use this wilderness time
to prepare and equip us.
Help us to be vastly aware
       of Your Presence
even in strange situations,
       for Your glory
and to bring Your name there.

Yet the men were
    very good to us,
and we suffered no harm,
and we did not miss
                 anything
when we were in the fields,
as long as we went with them.
They were a wall to us
both by night and by day,
all the while we were
with them keeping the sheep.

              1 Samuel 25. 15-16

(What we do,
how we do it,
how we live,
how we treat others
on the most ordinary days
   and in ordinary ways
prepares and protects us
and provides
  a strong witness to others
who we are
      and Whose we are.)

O LORD,
There are no ordinary days
     in Your sight.
There are no circumstances,
  just opportunities
  to love and serve You
in the ways we treat others.
Help us to be faithful to You
by doing all things
        with excellence,
        grace and love,
   in Your Name
   and for Your glory.
Align our hearts with Yours,
              O LORD.
Even in this.

And everyone
   who was in distress,
and everyone
   who was in debt,
and everyone
   who was bitter in soul,
gathered to him.
And he became
        captain over them.

         1 Samuel 22. 2

(God chooses
      the most unlikely,
the broken,
the marginalized,
the downtrodden,
those who know
that it is not in them,
but the strength
of the LORD at work.
God redeemed their lives.
God redeems our own.
Even in this.
Even through this.)

O LORD,
May we be known
not by our achievements,
abilities,
favorable or
   unfavorable circumstances,
but by our faithfulness to You.
There is not one of us
who has not seen despair
   or been downtrodden
   in one season or another.
When we trust You,
our situation does not change,
      but our hearts.
We see differently.
We choose differently.
We live differently
   to bless You
and give You glory,
    O Almighty One.
Be captain over us
that we may
          know You more.

...at the presence
   of the God of Jacob,
Who turns the rock
   into a pool of water,
the flint into
   a spring of water.

             Psalm 114. 8

(Whatever our
     impossible situation,
between the rock
       and the hard place,
in the dried up places,
deep in the wilderness
 where there are no trails,
His Presence does not
just change how
    I look at
    or approach it,
His Presence does not
necessarily change
    the circumstances,
but supersedes them.
God is superior
to whatever is going on.
God takes His rightful place.
How we see our days
is reflected by
   how we see God.
His Presence impacts
          our hearts
and thoughts
and attitudes
and actions
and how we approach
the hard stuff
      and the favorable.)

O LORD,
You are not just great.
You are the Almighty.
You guide
   even into the hard stuff.
You provide
  even in the impossible.
You multiply
       not just stuff we need,
but Your Presence
    all over this day,
all over this situation,
all over our hearts.
May Your power
            and glory
be revealed
   even in our inadequacies.
May our focus be
not on what we don't have,
but on Who You are.
May we worship You
  as we walk right into
  Your day for us.
Your Presence changes
            everything,
even our hearts.

And David had success
in all his undertakings,
for the LORD
       was with Him.

       1 Samuel 18. 14

(When we follow the LORD,
watch, listen,
and respond to Him,
something different
          always happens,
than if we went out
   on our own.
It is not about winning,
but intimacy with Him.
When we trust God,
no matter the circumstances
    or the outcome,
He empowers us in ways
   we don't even realize,
and it may not be
     about us at all,
but the flourishing of others.
We don't necessarily
     see in the dark,
but trust Him in the dark,
even in what
          we don't yet see.)

O LORD,
We thank You
not just for walking with us
but walking us through
the deep things of life
beyond our strength,
beyond our comprehension,
     but not beyond You.
Help us to trust You
     and be fearless
in serving You
   by loving others,
even in unlikely places
and unexpected ways.
Be with us
   in these struggles
and help us to see them
as opportunities
     to bring glory to You.
There is always more
                going on
than we can comprehend.

The LORD who delivered me
from the paw of the lion
and from the paw of the bear
will deliver me from
   the hand of this Philistine.

               1 Samuel 17. 37

(A chronicle of
    God's faithfulness,
a chronicle of
    God's preparedness,
one step of obedience
         to the next,
one step of His strengthening
         to the next,
one step of trusting Him
      even more to the next.
And we learn again and again,
     "I am with you.")

O LORD,
We all face what appears
    the insurmountable
    and overwhelming
in one dimension or another,
but this struggle
   is not insurmountable
                     to You.
Help us to follow You
and be strengthened by You
in the ordinary
that we would rely on You
      in the extraordinary.
If we do not trust You
and run with You
and be strengthened by You
     in the every days,
we will do nothing
            in the crisis.
Be our strength
             and our vision
that we would know You more
   even in what
   we don't yet see.
We need not fear
  because You are here
  and You are in this.
Be glorified, O LORD.

Friday, May 14, 2021

...and I will show you
    what you shall do.

         1 Samuel 16. 3

(Take one step
    of obedience to God
and the next step
    will become evident.
God uses willingness.
  "Trust Me in this."
We do not need to know
the outcome,
directions
     or direction,
or even the next step,
            to trust Him.
Because responding to God
     changes our hearts.
Faithfulness to God
         stays on course.
Be faithful in the now.
God takes care of the next.)

O LORD,
We come to You
with willing hearts
not just to do Your will
    but to love You.
It is not just in the doing
but in the abiding in You
     and being Yours.
Help us not just taking
        our next step
but to be faithful
            in the now.
You will show us
  what we shall do.
We don't have to
    run ahead of You,
just be willing
   to listen, respond
   and follow You
              into it.

Thursday, May 13, 2021

It may be that the LORD

       will work for us,
for nothing can hinder
             the LORD
from saving by many
    or by few.

              1 Samuel 14. 6

(We can never fully know
how God is working mightily
in a million
      different dimensions
      and lives
    (most likely more than that),
but we can know
        He is working.
Even in this.
Even through this.)

O LORD,
You are not hindered
           at all
by what appears
   impossible and daunting
and beyond our control
or power
or vision,
but You are glorified
through the overwhelming
that Your power
   is manifested
   to us
and to generations
after us.
Our legacy is a
chronicle
     of Your faithfulness.
Not narrow squeaks,
    but Your victory,
no matter the outcome.

For He shatters
the doors of bronze
and cuts in two
the bars of iron.

        Psalm 107. 16

(In the most impossible
          situations,
God does not just
provide a way through,
He provides His way
         into it.
God delivers
          not just out of,
but into for His glory.
There is always
   a lot more to this,
and that would be
  trusting Him in it.
We see bolted doors
         and dead ends.
God sees victory
in knowing
and trusting Him more.
God provides.
God protects.
God redeems.
God infiltrates
   His strength in this
   impossible situation.)

O LORD,
What seems a road block,
an impossible task,
a closing of opportunity
are Your ways
    of pointing us to You.
You may blast open
        that door of bronze,
You may lead us
               right through it,
but all along
that we would realize
  not our own strength
  and cleverness,
not even Your mighty hand,
        but Who You are,
   the Almighty God.
Help us to know You more
in whatever we face today.

But He said to them,
"It is I;
   do not be afraid."

          John 6. 20

(Even in mystery,
even in the shadows,
even when
      we don't understand,
may we recognize that
     Jesus is in this.
Know that He is with us
   and already at work.
Fear only distracts
   and disables us
   from what is before us.
When our youngest once

"Oh, if I knew you were here,
I would not have been afraid."
Jesus says to us,
    "Right here with you.
     I've got this.
     I'm in this.")

O LORD,
Help us not just
to walk with You,
but to abide in You.
We may not know
what this situation is
            all about,
but You can guide us
   in it and through it
          for Your glory.
Help us to keep our eyes

because not just
       You are here,
but You are God.
Please order our days,
guide our steps,
direct our thoughts,
align our hearts today

Now the day before Saul came,
the LORD had revealed
                to Samuel...

              1 Samuel 9. 15

(God prepares us
for His divine appointments,
even in those things
    we do not yet understand.
Each detail is essential
          to the whole,
every experience advances
          His purposes,
even when we cannot
yet see His story in it,
  nor the outcome.
What is this all about?
God says,
     "Trust Me in this,
      trust Me with this,
trust Me through this.")

O LORD,
We cannot know
for what You are
       preparing us
to fulfill Your purposes
and to bring You glory
in unexpected places.
Help us to seek You
not just about situations
or difficulties
or the mysteries,
    or for answers,
but to seek You.
Prepare Your way for us
as we enter a new week
that we may listen and
watch and respond
and follow You into it.
We cannot know
         what is ahead,
but You do.
And Your resolution
  may not yet be ripened.

...for those who
         honor Me
I will honor.

         1 Samuel 2. 30

(Faithfulness to God
is not impervious
        to circumstances,
but responsive to God
            in them.
Honoring God
always means
     making a choice
between my way
              or His,
between my glory
              or His.
For those who choose
to honor the LORD,
it is not just that
  the outcome will
  be very different,
      but the journey.
God honors
in His unexpected ways,
and always in
    His perfect timing.
God reveals
    and God redeems
far beyond our lifetimes.)

O LORD,
Help us to honor You
even in
    the simplest choices
    on ordinary days.
Because honoring You
          changes us
in ways we don't realize
to draw us closer,
to help us know You
in deeper dimensions,
as You guide and provide.
O LORD, order our days,
guide our steps,
direct our thoughts,
and align our hearts
              with Yours.
Help us to bring honor
         to You today
in whatever we do.

He will guard the feet
   of His faithful ones...

        1 Samuel 2. 9

(Faithfulness to God
   changes everything
about where He leads,
about what I do
   and how I do it,
about the journey,
about His uncountable
               outcomes.
Faithfulness to God
is not just about what I do,
but what it does to me.
Faithfulness
   keeps on keeping on,
sticking to God's Presence,
protection and provision,
even when I can't see
               the results.
God brings the fruitfulness
to generations beyond
              our lifetimes.
We have only to be
    faithful to Him
    in what He places
       before us.
One step of faithfulness
always directs to the next
and protects in ways
      we will never realize.)

O LORD,
We don't know what to do,
but our eyes are on You.
May whatever we do
and say
and pray
and how we serve You
reveal Your faithfulness
    and point others to You.
Help us to bring Your name
and Your glory
to impossible places,
even by how we follow You,
even by how we serve You,
even by how we
           love others
    in unexpected ways.
Help us to be faithful to You
        into this very day.
 No task is mundane
       for Your glory indeed.

...He sent a man
         ahead of them,
Joseph,
who was sold as a slave.

            Psalm 105. 17

(Even in what we
cannot understand,
even in really hard stuff,
God uses powerfully
          for generations.
Even in this lowly position,
God prepared Joseph
for what was to come.
God strategically and
divinely appoints us
in the most unlikely
and unexpected places
and ways
        for His glory
and the welfare of others
whom we may not know.
Even right where
        we are right now,
others are watching
to see if this God of ours
                  is real,
not by our successes
but how we respond
          when we are not.)

O LORD,
May we bless You today
in all that is before us,
right into Your glory
even in the struggles,
the difficulties,
and even the victories.
Help us to see prosperity
  as in following You and
not favorable circumstances.
Help us to realize that
faithfulness to You
carries far beyond
our lifetimes,
or achievements,
or what we can see.
Prepare us, O LORD,
not just for the future
   but for faithfulness
and fruitfulness
      in this work today.
And to know there are
   no ordinary days
          in Your glory.

They said to the woman,
"It is no longer
because of what you said
that we believe,
for we have heard
             for ourselves,
and we know
that this is indeed
the Savior of the world."

               John 4. 42

(Our witness,
our testimony,
our stories,
what we talk about,
what we pursue,
how we approach
     life differently,
points others to God.
Yes,
there is a different way
                  to live.
There is a God
      who loves you.)

O LORD,
You have placed each
        one of us
strategically among others
to point them to You.
Please help us
even on the most ordinary
              of days
and the most ordinary ways
to be faithful to You
and bold in our witness
in loving others
   right into Your Kingdom,
and in proclaiming
       "God did this.")

Those who devise good
meet steadfast love
       and faithfulness.

         Proverbs 14. 22

(In most things we do,
we cannot yet determine
               an outcome,
but devising good
     bears a promise.
Not just "do good,"
but "devise good,"
to intentionally plan,
imagine, create,
and scheme
by careful thought
and leaving something
for the benefit
and well-being for others
              in its wake.
The devising of good
  lingers for a long time.
What can I do with
      this mess and chaos?
Devise good
  in whatever form I can.
That which is good
            and very good
doesn't just happen.)

O LORD,
You are good.
You do good things.
You are faithful and loving.
May we reflect
    Your character
    and nature today
in whatever is before us.
Help us to bring You
   into this situation
by bringing something
   good and unexpected
      into this day.
Help us to devise good,
to think about it,
              and do it,
whether taking a first step,
working faithfully,
or finishing up what
               is left hanging.
And through it,
            worship You.

...we speak
of what we know,
and bear witness
to what we have seen...

          John 3. 11

(We speak about
what is important to us.
We bear witness
to what we
     have experienced.
Our words and witness
are reflected in what
we seek,
pursue,
how we respond,
how we love,
who we love,
and what we love.
Christ transforms
   our hearts
in visible ways.)

O LORD,
We ask that
Your love and grace
    and strength
be manifest in
   all we speak
and how we respond,
no matter
       the circumstances.
May our witness be
   Your transformation
           of our hearts.
Help us to approach
every struggle and joy
                differently
because we believe,
love
and follow You.

Jesus said
   to the servants,
"Fill the jars
         with water."
And they filled them
   up to the brim.

            John 2. 7

(Responding to God
                 fully,
   to the brim and
     and spilling over,
even when we
   don't know the outcome.
We have no idea
   how God will work
and how He
        is changing lives,
including our own hearts.)

O LORD,
We cannot know
how You are using us
and what You are up to.
Help us to
    fill the jars around us
    to overflowing.
You redeem all.
Nothing is common
      even as water
   in Your hands.
You redeem all.
And renew us
  through Your grace.
What do we need
     to do today?
Fill the jars
     for Your glory,
     Almighty God.

...and offered it
on the rock to the LORD,
to the One
   who works wonders.

            Judges 13. 19

(Am I placing this need,
this dilemma,
my shortcomings
         on the altar
and offering it to God?
Not just
   "show me what to
    do with this,"
but "align my heart
            with Yours."
Putting something
        on the altar
does not take it
     out of our hands,
but instead opens up
    our response to
    God's leading in it.
The word "works" here
is an active verb
and literally means
in Hebrew "working."
God is always
      up to something,
never ceases what
          He is doing,
never done.
We have only a glimpse
of what God can do
and of what He is doing
in our responding
                 to Him.)

O LORD,
We come before You
and lay on the altar
not just our sins
       and mess-ups,
but our praise and honor
   to You, Almighty One.
You are not just working
in our lives,
but You are abiding.
Help us to not miss
    the wonders
not just of what You do
        all around us,
but the wonders
       of who You are
and that You love us.
May we claim and proclaim
    Your Name
to our steps,
our words,
our actions,
our attitudes,
and point others to You.
This day
   is about Your glory,
even in what we
   cannot yet see.
